Subject: [1930buicks] 29 Buick Carb
Hello Everyone. I have been following the previous threads regarding
the Marvel carburetor issues with great interest .I have rebuilt a
few in the past with acceptable success .I own both a 1929 54CC and a
1930 64C. I was having problems with my 29 Buick carb and happened on
to an updraft  carb expert. I took it to him and it is literally
MUCH  better than new. I have not seen his name mentioned on the
site. His secret is the ability to mate newer Rochester quadrajet
needles to the specific carb specs and really knows the updraft
carburetor. He also knows the nuances of the air springs and
particular requirements of the different engines. This has not only
allowed perfect function but the needle and seat are now replaceable
at the local auto parts store! The only prerequisite is an intact
usable bowl and carb body. As you know, the 29 and 30 carb bowls are
a diecast unit. A list of things done to the heat riser and carb are
as follows: meticulous cleaning and prep  after complete dismantling
and inspection, resurfaced  gasket mating surfaces, rebushed throttle
and  choke shafts, replaced float with a balanced and appropriate
weight unit  then coated with moisture-cured urethane as well as
coating  inside of bowl. Install new gaskets, inlet valve, packing
and reconditioned metering piston, rod and metering spring. Installed
viton-tip needle and updated accelerator pump bushing. Replaced
diecast air valve baffle with an aluminum baffle and fitted to
throttle valve. Screws replaced and sealed with appropriate sealer
for application. All threads were cleaned and chased. A broken screw
was extracted in the heat riser. An anti rattle spring was replaced .
The choke plate had actually been previosly pressed on in reverse!!
The metering adjustment base required straightening and
resolder.Cosmetically all the hardware was deburred and tumble
polished .The external surfaces were all refinished as original. I
had already swedged a new heat riser sleeve into the heat riser and
purchased a repro  bowl cover. The unit does not leak through any
fitting. The gas does not disappear from the bowl now and there is no
over filling through the top of the bowl cover from a slow-to-close
valve.
If anyone is interested his name is Jeff Dreibus. His business
is "The Old Carb Doctor" He is in Nebo, North Carolina and his phone
# is 1-800-945-2272
. His price was reasonable and the updrafts are
the most expensive to do! A start-up price for the Marvel would be
$400-450 assuming you start with good components. He does not carry
kits or prebuilt units. He does everything on site. I have put a few
pics in the photo file of the unit before it was placed back on the
auto. The unit essentially did not require further adjustment  when
fitted on the car!
The short answer- a Marvel carburetor CAN be used in your
Buick.   Ken
